| An Explaination of the Director's Notebook | |
Dear Readers – I am Muhammad Ali Hasan, the Director/Writer of Rabia – welcome to the Director’s Notebook! Our purpose in including this section is to give everyone a glimpse of how much work and thought went into making Rabia. This part of the website is not for ego; rather, we hope that all filmmakers can see the amount of work that went into creating our artwork. In the Director’s Notebook, you will find many different portfolios. The Production Design portfolio shows off blueprints for all the sets that our Art Department built, in addition to schedules and budgets for building. It also includes notes from me to the Art Department, detailing the ‘look’ of the film and the goals we were aspiring towards. Lastly, you’ll also find specific notes to the Makeup and Costume Designers, as those elements were very important to the film. The Cinematographer’s notes include storyboards, as well as our original storyboard file from Frame Forge Studio, which will show off our digital set constructions and frame-by-frame snapshots of what were going to shoot. You will also find a powerpoint presentation prepared by our Cinematographer, Erick Crespo, detailing the film’s visual look and feel. The Post-Production section details notes to the Editor and Sound Designer, where you find specific notes on editing and sound design. It is a good reference for showing the different steps of post, as we aimed for picture lock first, and then completely focused on sound. Of course, my favorite section is the ‘personal’ director’s notebook, where you will find a director’s notebook that I always kept with me on set. It was my directing mentor, John Badham, who taught me how to put the notebook together, as he always kept one on set with him during the making of such films as Saturday Night Fever and Short Circuit. The personal notebook is prepared by the Director and is only for the Director, until production wraps up, of course. In the notebook, you will find detailed reasons and rationales behind the creation and motivation of each character. For me, the book was a reference for where I was coming from artistically, and writing such things down helped me to communicate my ideas to both the actors and the crew. The entire Director’s Notebook, including the personal notes, are crucial for the success of any film, whether it is a feature or short. Please feel free to reference the notes, check them out, and emulate them for your own uses. In all honesty, there is much more paperwork and notes behind what you are seeing here, but everything on this website is a good example of the kind of workflow our team went through. I’m very proud of our team and I think the work here is a good testament of that. May peace and love be upon you all! Muhammad Ali Hasan |
